How UK take-home pay is calculated

Your UK take-home pay is your gross salary minus four main deductions:

  • Income Tax β€” 20% on earnings Β£12,571–£50,270, 40% up to Β£125,140, 45% above that. The first Β£12,570 is tax-free.
  • National Insurance β€” 8% between Β£12,570 and Β£50,270, 2% above that.
  • Pension β€” auto-enrolment minimum is 5% employee contribution.
  • Student Loan β€” 9% of earnings above your plan's threshold.

The figures above use the 2024/25 tax year rates (6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025).

How US take-home pay is calculated

Your US paycheck is reduced by federal, state, and FICA taxes:

  • Federal Income Tax β€” graduated brackets from 10% to 37%, after your standard deduction.
  • Social Security β€” 6.2% on wages up to $168,600 (2024).
  • Medicare β€” 1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% over $200k (single).
  • State Income Tax β€” varies from 0% (TX, FL, NV, WA and others) up to 13.3% (California).
  • 401(k) β€” pre-tax contributions reduce your taxable income.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the UK take-home pay calculator?

Very accurate for standard PAYE employees using the standard 1257L tax code. The calculator uses the 2024/25 income tax bands, National Insurance rates, and student loan thresholds. Results may differ slightly from your payslip due to rounding, non-standard tax codes, or other deductions your employer makes (e.g. Cycle to Work, childcare vouchers).

What is the personal allowance for 2024/25?

The UK personal allowance for 2024/25 is Β£12,570. This is the amount of income you can earn before paying any income tax. If you earn over Β£100,000, your personal allowance is gradually reduced β€” it disappears entirely at Β£125,140.

Does the US calculator account for state taxes?

Yes β€” select your state from the dropdown and the calculator applies that state's income tax rate. Nine states have no state income tax (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming). State rates are approximations β€” for exact figures, use your state's tax authority website.

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your salary before any deductions. Net pay (take-home pay) is what lands in your bank account after income tax, National Insurance (UK) or FICA taxes (US), pension contributions, and any other deductions are removed.

How does a pension contribution affect my take-home pay?

In the UK, salary sacrifice pension contributions reduce your gross pay before tax is calculated. This means you save tax and National Insurance on your contributions β€” a Β£100 pension contribution might only cost you Β£68 in actual take-home pay if you're a basic rate taxpayer.
